Congratulations to those men who made the cut and a challenge to the rest to join the Student of Fair Ability Club.

A new scholarship formula was instituted for Fall 2002 to encourage more brothers to hit the books. New categories include Most Improved GPA and a Cumulative GPA Award to the chapter if it meets or exceeds 2.75. And for the first time, four incoming UM freshmen were awarded $500 each for submitting an application which demonstrated superior grades, school and community involvement and an essay. This was part of our ongoing pledge plan.

Scholarship Endowment
Our partnership with the UM Foundation was formalized this semester by transferring almost $100,000 into their safekeeping. In addition to this, the scholarship fund purchased the House’s mortgage note from First Citizens Bank of almost $50,000 and will benefit from a secured note with higher interest rate than available elsewhere.

The goal of the scholarship fund is to build a $1,000,000 endowment by the year 2012 with the generous support of alumni brothers and friends.

Since Sigma Chi Building Foundation is approved by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, donations are tax deductible. Cash, securities, real estate or other assets can also be donated. Montana taxpayers can contribute to the scholarship fund and receive an additional Montana tax credit. For details, contact our Director of Special Gifts, Walt Kero ‘74 at 406.549.4148.

News & Noteworthy
Jeff Burchett ‘01
has joined the staff of Sigma Chi International as a Leadership Consultant. He will serve the North Atlantic, Southern Missouri, Northern Ohio, South Carolina, Georgia and Mid Atlantic Provinces.

Kevin Murphy ‘81 and wife Martha gave birth to twins in November 2000 which include a son, Carson James (named after James Murphy ‘51) and daughter Montana Duschense (named after, well, you know). The family lives in Truckee California and is a regular participant in the world famous 10th Annual Beta Delta Golf Tournament coordinated by Bill Todd ‘57.

Cam Slade ‘85 continues his tradition of generous in kind contributions by providing Microsoft Windows XP software to help manage the chapter website and communications.

Mike Marcinkowski - Iota Alpha ‘92 has stepped up to serve as Assistant Chapter Advisor. He will work closely with the Magister to assist in pledging and pledge retention.

Marius Karoy ‘01 "I just returned from Thailand and had an amazing time. The Thai people are by far the gentlest, most friendly people I have ever met. And of course, the women are gorgeous too! I visited Baan Chevit Mai, a shelter for AIDs infected children. Maybe that’s something Beta Delta could raise money for.

I am working primarily as a temp as the job market in Norway is rotten. I intend to move back to the States next year."

JJ Wuerthner, Jr. ‘46 sent in a remembrance of events that took place in the 1960s. While too extensive to reprint here, here’s the short version: Brother JJ was instrumental in helping form Brothers for Goldwater in 1964 to assist Barry Goldwater - Beta Phi ‘32 in his bid for the presidency. John Wayne - Alpha Upsilon ‘29 and other prominent Sigs were recruited to raise campaign funds and support.

Brothers for Goldwater hired Ronald Reagan to speak on behalf of Goldwater on October 27, 1964. That now famous event is known as "The Speech". The Speech defined American conservatism and drew a line in the sand for America’s opponents. Here is a quote:

"Where then, is the road to peace? Well, it’s a simple answer after all. You and I have the courage to say to our enemies, ‘There is a price we will not pay.’ ...You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness..."

Even though Barry did not make the cut, that event is credited with opening the door to Reagan’s election to the presidency.

There is much more to Brother JJ’s story which will be posted at the chapter website soon. It is a moving piece of history in which a Beta Delta brother had a hand.

Renovation Update
2002 continued to be a year of significant accomplishment as we checked major projects off the To Do List:

Kitchen and Breakfast Nook. These rooms and the adjoining hallway underwent a major facelift with new paint, commercial flooring, plantation shutters and a new upright freezer. All came compliments of Tom Cotter ‘53.

New Windows Forty five new Pella brand energy efficient windows were installed replacing 75% of the total glass area. The new windows are wood clad with brown aluminum that will blend nicely with the color scheme. This project was made possible by a special arrangements by Ron Hauf ‘82.

Brick Wall The backyard wall received a long overdue cleaning, tuck pointing and the granite caps were caulked to prevent moisture intrusion. Several of the corner caps were replaced as well. This will give it many more years of service.

Roof Repair. Some progress was made on the tile roof this fall although, the project is still not complete. The complexities of replacing historical tiles have been considerable but we are nearing the final turn.

future Renovation
Even though much has been accomplished over the past three years, there is much still to do. Here is our Yet To Do List:

  • Bedrooms Refurbish with wall and trim repair, paint, light fixtures, new carpet and window treatments.
  • 2nd & 3rd Floor Hallways Refurbish with wall repair, paint and carpet.
  • Slant Shack & Back Shack Insulate walls and install energy efficient wall heaters; install fire wall on garage side; rebuild stairs to Slant.
  • Ski Shack Repair cracked foundation, brick and mortar; install new roof and gutters.
  • Fireplaces Repair crumbled firebrick and floor tile; repair copper hoods; install custom fit doors/screens.
  • Window Treatments 1st Floor Install new draperies and/or blinds.
  • Archive Room Refurbish to allow better storage, temperature and moisture control.
  • Library Renovation Refinish walls and floor; repair stain glass windows; repair lighting.
  • Landscaping. Develop new landscape design. Remove overgrown or dead trees, bushes and plants. Install sprinkler system. Install new landscaping according to plan.

The goal is to have all work completed for Beta Delta’s 100th Anniversary in 2006. As you can see, there is still much to do but we will continue as long as financial support continues. Speaking of which:

Fundraiser at $272,469
Our capital fundraiser has now reached the 78% "there" mark with 259 brothers contributing. For the names, see the back of the Give Back Fundraiser Form.

There are about 1200 living Beta Delta Sigma Chis. That leaves about 941 that have not yet contributed. Why not step up to the plate now? We have only $77,531 more to go to reach our goal of $350,000. And every penny is needed to complete the carefully chosen tasks.

A Give Back Fundraiser Form has been conveniently enclosed for your use. By the way, if you’ve had a good year, why not throw in a little extra.
