News From the Brothers

Dennis Bugge ‘69: I have spent the last 30 years in San Diego and Phoenix raising a family and building a career. I now have a renewed interest in Montana, UM in particular and most especially Sigma Chi Beta Delta.. Some of my fondest memories go back to those undergraduate days at 1110 Gerald. I've lost contact with most of the Bros, re-established contact with a few, but am looking for a vehicle of sorts to build a tighter e-mail forum. Call me at 480/419-8493.

Bill Miles Jr. ‘46: In 1947, we housed 72 Sigs at 1110 Gerald. Those were some great years for those of us who had our college time split in two parts due to War II. We had two seatings at lunch and dinner as the dining room held only 30 at once. We were able to open up the attic for sleeping quarters but there was no heat or lights. There were only three bathtubs in the House but we made do.

We put together the display in the Library to honor the 24 Sigs killed in the war. Beta Delta lost more brothers than any other fraternity chapter.

What a diverse group we had then: football players, piano players (16 of us), scholars, student body president, pharmacy, forestry, law school, biology, business, mathematics and art. Permanent friendships were forged.

The biggest sorrow in my life was with four sons, all college grads, not one pledged ANY fraternity. They will never know what they missed. Please provide me a list of names and addresses of men from 1939 to 1952. I would be most happy to give them a kick in the butt to get busy with a money pledge to your fundraiser.

Dick Grieb ‘49: It’s been 53 years since I moved out of the House. Time flies. In hoc.

Tom Hines ‘63: Lou Aleksich '63 and I are planning a party for all Sigs who graduated in the 1960s It will be held after the Homecoming Game on October 4th. We have reserved the Boardroom at the Holiday Inn Parkside with a full cash bar for drinks. Please RSVP to 406/ 652-2824 or email tshinesjr@aol.com so we can plan.

Tom Stockburger ‘74: All is good with Lucy and the kiddos - our son Kyle is 17, a senior and headed to college - Keely our daughter is 21 and back home after a false start at UNC (Greeley) - still can't get either one interested in UM. Lucy and I turned 50 this year and we are taking that just fine.

Scholarship Endowment

The UM Foundation has $100,000 of Beta Delta’s scholarship endowment in their safekeeping. In addition, the endowment owns a $50,000 mortgage note on 1110 Gerald generating a higher interest rate.  The goal of the scholarship fund is to build a $1,000,000 endowment by the year 2012 with the generous support of alumni brothers and friends.

The Beta Delta house corporation (Sigma Chi Building Foundation) is approved by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation and donations are tax deductible. Cash, securities, real estate or other assets can also be donated. Won’t you consider donating to this worthy cause to give the chapter a scholastic advantage? 2003 Renovation Update

Tile Roof Project. 2003 was a year of finishing up loose ends. The biggest component of our House renovation, the tile roof, was completed after four years of planning and execution. The task was formidable but the results impressive.

The House and Garage both now sport renovated roofs using a combination of new field tiles accented by 100 year old Ludowici tiles laid over a bullet proof underlayment and trimmed with copper fascia and gutters. The Garage has not had a tile roof for over 30 years when the brothers stripped it to rebuild the House roof.

Fire Escape Upgrade. The rear fire escape has been upgraded for safety and fit with the new roof.

future Renovation Plans

Even though much has been accomplished over the past three years, there is much still to do. Here is our Yet To Do List:

Bedrooms: Refurbish with wall and trim repair, paint, light fixtures, new carpet and window treatments.

2nd & 3rd Floor Hallways:  Refurbish with wall repair, paint and carpet.

Slant Shack & Back Shack:  Insulate walls and install energy efficient wall heaters; install fire wall on garage side; rebuild stairs to Slant.

Ski Shack: Repair cracked foundation, brick and mortar; install new roof and gutters.

Fireplaces: Repair crumbled firebrick and floor tile; repair copper hoods; install custom fit doors/screens.

Window Treatments 1st Floor:  Install new draperies and/or blinds.

Archive Storage Room:  Refurbish to allow better storage, temperature and moisture control.

Library Renovation:  Refinish walls and floor; repair stain glass windows; repair lighting.

Landscaping: Develop new landscape design. Remove overgrown or dead trees, bushes and plants. Install sprinkler system. Install new landscaping according to plan.

The goal is to have all work completed for Beta Delta’s 100th Anniversary in 2006. As you can see, there is still much to do but we will continue as long as financial support continues. Speaking of which:

Fundraiser at $280,000

Our capital fundraiser has now reached the 80% "there" mark with 270 brothers contributing. For the names, see the back of the Give Back Fundraiser Form.  There are about 1200 living Beta Delta Sigma Chis. That leaves 930 that have not yet contributed. Why not step up to the plate now? We have only $70,000 more to go to reach our goal of $350,000. And every penny is needed to complete the carefully chosen tasks.  Simply fill out a Give Back Contribution Form and mail it in with your check. And if you’ve had a good year, why not throw in a little extra?

All Honor to Their Names

A Sig until I die

Cory "Riggs" Rigler ‘98 shared the following with Active Chapter recently to help their rushing efforts:

Dr. William deVries, a Sig from University of Utah, was the inventor of the first artificial heart, arguably the most important medical invention in history. At the press conference to announce its discovery during the mid '80s, Dr. DeVries made the following statement: "I promise to give a complete interview and answer everyone's questions on one condition: you must name Sigma Chi and the role it played in my life."

When brother deVries was a freshman at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, he did what most freshman do: he went out with the ladies; partied a little too hard- basically paid more attention to his social life than his academic life.

One night, deVries was walking down the stairs of the chapter house on his way out the door to party. Waiting for him at the bottom of the stairs were a group of brothers who intercepted him before he could head out the door. They stopped him and asked: "What are you doing?" When brother deVries responded he was getting ready to head out, they said, "No. What are you doing? You want to be a doctor? You won't even graduate at this rate."

Beginning that night, those older active brothers made sure deVries was with them as they headed out to study. If he had a test, they helped him to prepare. With some hard work and a renewed dedication to succeed, Brother deVries eventually graduated with a 4.0, went on to Harvard Medical School, and on to artificial heart fame.

At the end of his press interview, Dr. deVries concluded with this remark: "If it hadn't been for the brothers of Sigma Chi, I wouldn't be here and the artificial heart probably wouldn't be here either."

During rush week, let's not forget what separates us from the other fraternities. Many offer only parties and their friendships often go no deeper than drinking buddies. But what we have at Sigma Chi is precious because we honestly care about each other and support one another, through good times and bad. (Even if it means we have to say or do things to each other that the brother doesn't want to hear.) And even more importantly, this brotherhood and deep friendships won't stop once you graduate. Which is why we can honestly say: "I'll be a Sig until I die!"

Where are they now?

We need current contact information for the following brothers. Email it to rich@regenesis.net or mail to Rich Thompson, PO Box 19605, Portland OR 97280 or call 503.977.7974.
