SPECIAL MEETING
SIGMA CHI BUILDING FOUNDATION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
JULY 23, 2000
AT 1110 GERALD, MISSOULA, MONTANA

Board President Rich Thompson called the meeting to order the following people were present:  Richard Thompson, Walt Kero, Brad Colberg, John Rimel, Tom McKay, Mark Peterson, Dan Cederberg, Jeff Burchett, Jake Lennington, and Ty Winegartner.

Brad Colberg started the meeting by giving a financial report.

The board next discussed the problem with the shower leaking into the breakfast nook.  It was noted Brad Colberg would arrange for a plumber to troubleshoot the matter and repair the problem as needed.

It was noted that there was a potential problem with the dishwasher.  The new dishwasher was having periodic drain problems.  Rich was going to contact the vendor for a warranty repair and coordinate with Jake.

The brick mason removed a number of downspouts to do his work on the House brick and mortar which is now completed most excellently.  John will arrange to have the downspouts reinstalled.

The galley doors are in need of refinishing.  John has taken them to North Avenue Refinishing for that purpose and will rehang and lock them down.

The oven/range and hood need to be steam cleaned.  Brad will arrange.

The oven/range needs an overhaul.  Jake will provide names of individuals who do this work to Brad for scheduling.

The tile entry floor project has not yet been started.  Rich will contact Old World Tile to push it forward.  Suggestions were made to crown the new floor so that water will drain off and to salvage some of the old tile so that the carport floor can be repaired.

The steam boiler system has developed leaks in pipes that have damaged the west walls of Orchid and the Music Room.  John, Mark and Brad are coordinating with a Missoula HVAC engineer (didn’t write down the name) to do a thorough inspection and analysis of the whole system to evaluate options for repair or replacement.  They will have leaking pipes repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

The fire escape needs repair to various steps and the new back steps need a handrail made and installed.  John will contact one or more welders to get costs with a goal of completing repairs prior to winter.

Carport roof needs urgent repair that can’t wait until next summer.  A Summer House Works project is planned to strip and store the clay tile, remove the underlayment, repair the deck if possible and apply 30# felt paper to waterproof it for the winter.  Brad advises that there is a UM football game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 2 so the project will need to be completed by Saturday noon.  John will arrange for palates and a forklift so that the tiles can be safely and quickly removed and stored.

New tiles have come loose or been broken on the Sun Deck roof.  The actives were reminded that no one should set foot on any tile roof surfaces under pain of death (or worse:  reactivation).  We will attempt repairs during Summer House Works.

A satellite dish was placed by some bygone brother on one of the House chimneys.  It will be removed during Summer House Works.

As usual, there is a fair amount of debris and cast off furniture that needs to be removed from the House.  We need all available trucks, Actives and Alumni to pitch in a Summer House Works scheduled for Friday September 1 from 9-5 and Saturday September 2 from 9-12.  Please pass the word along and MARK YOUR CALENDARS.

The status of the brick wall on ski shack  was discussed.  It was noted that the wall was not structural so that there was no safety hazard associated with the deterioration of the wall.  It was determined that stop gap repair issues should be considered.  The brick wall around the back yard was also discussed.  It was noted that there would be an effort to seal up some of the areas where water was getting in during the work day scheduled for September.  Creating a storage area in the basement was discussed.  It was noted that it was not a high priority at this time.  Overall repair of the roof was discussed.  The estimate for repair was one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.  It was noted we could probably borrow a forklift from alumni brother Bill Watkins to assist in the repair.  It was also noted that John Rimel had some palates that we could possibly use.

An investment policy for the funds contributed to the fundraiser was discussed.  John Rimel made a motion to sell any non-cash that we received as soon as possible after receipt unless directed to do otherwise by the donor.  Dan Cederberg seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

Tom McKay was introduced as the Balfour Scholarship winner for the 2000-2001 school year.  Tom indicated that he had some ideas about handling the position.  He indicated that he would have a local scholarship dinner each semester.

Assistance with the financial management of the chapter by Kathy Knight was discussed.  On motion made, second and then unanimously passed, it was determined that we should continue to use Kathy Knight to assist in financial management of the active chapter.

The University Greek relations policy was discussed.  Rich Thompson indicated he was working on the policy.

The placing of the bell in the field house was discussed.  The dedication of the placing was scheduled for the day before homecoming.  The bell was going to be placed in the middle of the field house lobby.  The Foundation has agreed to pay half the price of the display.

It was noted that we should attempt to have J.C. McLaughlin and Sam Roberts recognized as Significant Sigs.

There being no further business to come before the meeting, the meeting was adjourned.
